Episode Transcription

Narrator:

One of the hardest decisions a woman has to make is when and if to have a child.

Minister:

I'm a mother, and I imagine some of you might be mothers too. So, if you're missing your kids today while we travel and you just want to tell somebody about them, I would love to see their pictures or hear your stories, or just hear their names.

Narrator:

Making this choice is a human right.

Clergy:

One reason why we're doing this is because this church is where the women of this church created the Roe v. Wade case that made abortion legal in America. So, you are in the place where abortion as a faith perspective was honored and valued.

Crowd:

Abortion rights are here to stay.

Narrator:

As the battle for Roe v. Wade rages across America, lives are at stake. The lives of those whose choices have been taken from them because barriers to abortion have caused many of them to cross state lines to seek reproductive services.

Patient:

I live in Texas where the ban has occurred on abortions after a heartbeat is detected.

Minister:

I believe firmly that you should be able to go someplace simply and easily, and you should not have to get on this plane.

Doctor:

I've heard a little bit about you from your counselor. You're going to be doing a medication abortion today, correct?

Patient:

But the trip would have went way differently if we didn't have support there.

Narrator:

This is not a journey. Anyone should have to take alone.

Doctor:

Now you have to go to another state. That first of all is just very scary for so many people. Where do I go? Where is the clinic? How long am I going to be there? What if I don't get the care that I need?

Doctor:

Well, there's one thing that we know for sure, and that is making abortion illegal or inaccessible doesn't make the need for it go away, that folks will still need it and they will do what they can to find access to it. We're going to be facing a healthcare and public health crisis in this country like we've never seen before.

Narrator:

Crossing the line to freedom of choice for their body, for their future and for ours.

Patient:

I started doing school again. I started being a mom again, I don't regret it.

Narrator:

Crossing the line is an audio documentary series telling stories from the front lines in the fight for reproductive freedom. You'll follow the individuals who must travel long distances to seek abortion services and the heroes who help them along the way. Crossing the line, one journey at a time.

Doctor:

I think the days of physicians just being doctors, showing up to do medicine and healing and surgery are long gone. Actually, I think we now see that folks who are entering medicine are entering it from a lens and commitment to justice.
